Alibaba has launched a campaign to find the next great African hip hop stars.

Alibaba is a Chinese e-commerce company that started in 1999, and it’s now one of the largest online retailers in the world. In 2015, Alibaba launched the first African Hip Hop Viral Video Challenge as part of its multi-year campaign to promote cultural integration between China and Africa. The contest was open to rappers across all countries on the continent, who were tasked with creating music videos using Alibaba products (like smartphones) as props or themes.

The winner was selected by an expert panel including rapper Sarkodie from Ghana; Nigerian drummer Tony Allen; and South African producer/DJ Yellow Claw (who also helped choose this year’s winner).

Alibaba has produced a series of music videos featuring African artists, shot in Africa and featuring African culture. The videos are available on Alibaba’s Youku channel, which has over 100 million subscribers.

The most recent edition saw more than 6 million entries from across Africa that were narrowed down to 250 finalists who competed for $1 million prize money at a gala event held in Nairobi last week (October 2nd).
